Agriculture in Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs), particularly in Machakos County, has always been a demanding venture. Today, the challenge is amplified by a rapidly accelerating climate crisis. For the over 70% of Machakos residents who rely on agriculture for their livelihoods, climate change is a daily reality marked by unpredictable and decreasing rainfall, rising temperatures, and widespread crop failure. This vulnerability has resulted in chronic food insecurity, with traditional rain-fed maize yields often struggling to break 10 bags per acre—far below the national average. The scientific consensus and farmer perception are clear: the rain-fed farming model is no longer sustainable, requiring a definitive and strategic response. Farm Safi is confronting this challenge head-on by proving that through strategic

irrigation and technology, high-yield maize cultivation is not just possible, but a powerful engine for local development. Our irrigated maize cultivation is a direct and definitive response to climate uncertainty. It acts as a climate shield, decoupling production from unreliable weather patterns to ensure predictable harvests and higher farmer income. By implementing modern, efficient irrigation systems, we are achieving remarkable, measurable results. The most dramatic impact is the potential to increase the average maize yield from a highly volatile 5 to 10 bags per acre under rain-fed conditions to a consistent 25 to 40 bags per acre. This represents a transformative 300% to 400% increase in productivity and ensures 100% harvest security against drought-related failure, stabilizing the local food supply.

This initiative is a critical contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, our work addresses SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by guaranteeing 2-3 harvests per year and a 4X yield increase, directly combating food scarcity. It also aligns with SDG 13 (Climate Action), as the use of irrigation is a vital Climate Adaptation Strategy that builds resilience against projected temperature rises. Furthermore, the higher, more reliable incomes, which include a 20% to 30% better profit margin per bag, align with SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), empowering farmers to invest in their communities. We are also committed to SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) by employing efficient methods like drip irrigation, which can save up to 40%
of water compared to traditional methods, ensuring the sustainable use of scarce resources. Farm Safi is committed to making this success replicable. Through our Demonstration Farms, which will hold regular trainings throughout the year, we are providing the knowledge, skills, and data on Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) to other farmers in Machakos County. We are cultivating not just maize, but a resilient, prosperous, and food-secure future. This initiative is a clear statement that with innovation and commitment, local agriculture can both adapt to climate change and advance global development goals.
